While I do have sumps on both of my tanks, I have seen a couple of fantastic tanks that are run sumpless and the corals in them are very healthy, grow like crazy and have fabulous colors.
I think the folks with successful tanks that are sumpless may well be practicing more regimented husbandry techniques than some folks who do run sumps as they may need to be more careful in how they add top off water or dose, or whatever.
Not sure what trade offs anyone is talking about unless you mean having more wiggle room since you have a larger water volume to gamble on.

I'll guarantee you this..we trample all over each other to buy the corals when one of these members posts a sale thread. Maybe you haven't been lucky enough to go to their home yet :)
...there are no pics in that gallery either...

LOL, Kathy, I so tried to trample you for those lavender clove polyps.

I have to admit, when I was running sumpless, I had less problems with algae than I do now. The Remora secretly worked wonders & I did have a DIY ATO connected so I didn't have to worry about manually adding freshwater.

But there are tradeoffs, I like that my skimmer & heater are in the sump. Plus I could get rid of one of the powerheads because of the return. The inside of my tank looks so much cleaner & I have been afforded to add a vegetable filter (cheato). On top of that, I have somwhere to keep naughty animals & to harvest pods (none yet :( )

Plus my tank is running cooler, even tho I have PCs. I can do water changes without bothering the main display & scaring my fish. I like being sumped up.

Fcunfcu The tank is a 100 gallon, 6' long tank set up in 1972.
I still use a reverse UG filter and a homemade skimmer with ozone.
The substrait is dolomite. For about 25 years the tank was full of soft corals and fish. Lighting is MH.
THere are a few pictures in my gallery.

my best advice for no sump is to make sure you have your skimmer attached to a large waste collector. I never had luck with hang on skimmers not flooding at some point.

nasty skimmate is not what you want on the floor :dead1: I like my skimmer contained in the sump.

Paul B, nice tank like the Moorish Idol, however notice some build-on on the surface area. Amazing that your tank is working so well for you with underwater filtration.

Jhale, I often empty skimmer collection cups, looking at Octopus HOB right now, it would overflow back into the unit, so no worry about overflowing the floor. Btw, the Blue Tip Stag I got from you two months ago is doing well. Thanks.

Well I have never had a sump no open water systems allowed in the condo and I think my tank looks ok. The real big benifit of the sump however in my opinion is a larger water volume. If I could I would have a 90g sump hooked up to my 24 pod for more water volume :)

You could always put the sump in the tank for an AIO. That's how mine is now and I love it. As long as the tank is sturdy no chance of floods. Only issue is that you have to make sure your equipment is quiet because you don't have a cabinet to enclose the noise. I even put an external overflow on the inside of tank so I can still use socks and feed my skimmer direct. Don't have a tank thread yet but will soon.

Just to mention that I had a sumpless FOWLR 55 gallon five years ago that was running great. The fish all die during transfer when I move. That sumpless 55 gallon was setup with Remora Pro, LR and LS and powerhead.
