i wanted to add a few pieces of live rock to my tank and wanted to find out would it foul up my water? i have a 150g tank with roughly 120lbs of rock, i was thinking of adding possibly 2 or 3 pieces, maybe another 15-20 lbs worth.

What is the condition of the new LR? Is it coming from someone tank, where they've had it for years and it completely cured, or are you getting it from a LFS, that may just have gotten it in? Also does the LR have have a lot of material that could die, like sponge or plant life? If it does than it's probably best to cured it in a pail or container before you place it in your tank.

If the LR is cured, with the possibility of very little die off or a spike, you could add it slow to your tank. The amount. of LR, is small and your tank should be able to handle the spike.

i would be getting from my lfs, it has been in his holding tank for about a month....i can't set-up a curing bucket because i don't have the space right now so maybe i will only add 1 piece at a time and evaluate the tank. i will put in extra rowa-phos and carbon as a precaution

Does the LFS get the LR and then let it cure or do they keep adding more LR to the tank? If they let it cure then the LR maybe completely cured and then ok to add to your tank. You may experience a small spike but your tank should be able to handle it, especially since it's only a small amount of LR being added.

You also want to scrap off any sponges or plant matter that may die, which could causing a spike.

they use a FIFO system, they systematically move from 1 tank to the next....i haven't examined the rock for die off yet but i usually scrub any rock before it goes in my tank

I would think the LR is probably ok, just get some pieces that don't have a lot of sponges or plant material on them. Also smell the tank, that the LR is in, and the LR too, if it smell like fresh sea water then the LR is probably ok to place straight into your tank, just add it slowly and see if see if you have a spike. Be prepared to do a water change and add carbon or a poly pad.
