Either an external overflow-completely outside the tank, or an external durso. Have just the elbow of the bulkhead on the inside of the tank. If so, you could make an overflow box to just cover the elbow. (see ellebelle's 40 breeder thread)

anyone > i know of several ways to do it and hate to have a overflow box in tank, so if i can get around that, and really dont want to cut the top of tank to make a external overflow

I think BC's idea of only the elbow being in the tank is gonna work best for you if you don;t want to do the external. Unless you make the external by cutting the notches at the top of the tank but not the very top but I heard its very time consuming.
