I only have my main pump on battery backup.
I figure the fish/coral/etc can survive a day or 2 with out lights/skimming. But the water needs to be oxygenated. This way I maximize the time my backup will run.
I figure I have about 6-8 hours of backup.

I have APC also

Oxygenation is created by breaking the surface tension of the water. So no, a cpu fan is not adequate.

I run my heater and my return pump from a deep cycle marine battery and power inverter. In an apartment in the city they won't let you run a generator, so this is a viable option in addition to the UPS battery backup. Just another way to handle various situations.

Don't bother with the skimmer, just concentrate on heat and water movement. once you set up your back up system, shut off the power and see how long they last. you might want to get a lower wattage pump so it lasts longer. another cheap solution is a battery powered airstone. you can keep it around and just throw it in when the power goes out.
