Same level dwellers the pistol may get a little aggro to the mandarin and so might the goby Swimming around the hole of the Goby pistol pair. .

Aren't these the blind shrimp (they're pistols?) that hang with these gobies?
And not to take anything away from Rookie..I don't know how long he'll have the Mandarin in a 34g tank with that little rockwork (as nice as it does look...) Fuge or not.

I was just trying to play it safe. Thinking more of a mid level dweller would be better, My Goby attacks Nassarius snails that get too close to his hole. Never had a pistol shrimp.

SIx lines get very territorial. They tend to get very mean towards any fish/inverts esp in small tanks.

I don't believe they are related though they are often kept together in tanks and compliment each other well in their non aggressive tendencies & diet.
I'm sorry I'm not familiar enough with them regarding mated pairs...I think JH has a couple but not sure if they are a pair.

Pipefish are a small group of fish from within the family Syngnathidae, meaning 'jaw fused.' Although the Syngnathidae is commonly called the Pipefish family, the most notable fish of this family are in the subfamily Hippocampinae, the Seahorses. In total, the Pipefish family contains four subfamilies, 55 genera, and over 320 species (Kuiter, 2000). At one point the animals in this family were thought to be insects (Rafinesque, 1810; Michael, 1998), but it is now clearly known these animals are actually fish, even if they are strange-looking fish.

Phil, I would actually stay away from ALL wrasses with the mandarin. Wrasses are extremely aggressive feeders and they will decimate your pods before your mandarin even has a chance.

- What about a firefish, like a helfrichi or a purple firefish? Small, docile, non-competitive, very pretty.
- Yellow assessors are great fish as well, brightly colored and active swimmers. Plus they swim upside down when the lights go out. Mine was from ORA (may he RIP :( )
- You could also get a small algae blenny (like a Starry blenny - I would stay away from escenius species because they will eat your pods as well). These aren't the most colorful, but very fun to watch.
- Neon gobies are also nice and active and quite colorful in their own way. Plus you can buy them tank bred and not take more fish out of the ocean! :)

I started a saltwater tank because I wanted a flame angel. Every time I see them in stores, I want one a little more. But then I think ... munchy, munchy. I'm not willing to take the crap shoot, especially after I saw my ex-boyfriend's coral beauty kill his gorgeous clam in under a week. Not worth it.

Dude, a flame is too big for your tank. My flame is big, fat and he picks fights with everybody. I think a 55 gal is a minimum for a flame.

You stocking is perfect right now for your tank size, I don't think you should get any more fishes.
