Dead live sand

Hello everyone I was wondering if someone gave me live sand like 100 pds
and I left it in my buckets for days or weeks it'll be dead sand right?

Now my question is can i just put the sand in a new set up and run it for a month or more to bring it back or do i have to clean the sand out first..and if i have to clean the sand out how would i do it??

beleive me after a week or so you wont even want that bucket of sand around, the smell is so unbearable it smells like sulphur i went through the same thing last week i washed it really really well but it did'nt make a difference i think you might just dump it and get new sand .
