I've read somewhere that certain algae will crash after undergoing sexual reproduction. What brings on the sexual reproduction ( many alga normally reproduce via asexual reproduction ) can be many things.

Could be. I got some red leafy algae (looks like kelp) that does that. buds form on the leaves then the leaf turn yellowish green and the buds pop off. But usually it's just a few leaves. This whole thing went starch white.

What your red algae does sounds more like asexual reproduction.
