I was in your same spot not too long ago, but it's just a matter of getting the rocks and start messing around with them. Have a general idea of what you want to do or how you want your tank to look, and then start working with the rocks. I looked at a bunch of established fish tanks in here and looked for a set up that i liked, then i tried to recreate it in my tank.

We just did ours and changed it four times in three days. Easiest thing to do is look at other tanks to get ideas on what you like, ex. caves, no caves, wall, shelves etc.

Once you get your rock (we found by peoples recommendations for what we like to get big pieces rather than rubble types was easier) lay it out on a tarp in front of the tank. This way you can see it all and play with it. And use two people this way one can direct and one can place. And when you go to pick out rock if you don't have it already bring a picture of a tank you like.

When we added more rock I brought my camera with a pic of the rock we already had put in place and looked at it as I choose the new rock.
