Are you cleaning the outside of the tank with windex? The ammonia in windex will leach right through the glass. Ammonia molecules are smaller then H2O molecules and algea feed off ammonia.

Not really true. The fumes may get into your tank. But not true the glass but throught the air. I just spoke to my friend who is a chemist he says it cant go through the glass. But he said maybe someone might have cleaned the glass on the inside before he bought the tank.

I had the exact same problem. I went to Country Critters in Patchogue and the owner Jonathon asked me the same question. I stopped using it and 2 weeks later the tank cleared up. His Number 631 758-6777. You can debate it with him.

I have this antique windex bottle, made of glass. It must have been messy with the ammonia leeking right through the bottle all the time.

Once again I am sure that the bottle has a opening. which means the ammonia evaporates out of that opening. then condesing on the bottle around it.

Question though... glass is pourous isn't it? So overtime and many many uses of cleaning products wouldn't some traces end up making it in the tank? Sorry to keep running with the Windex thing but it just seems logical to me to not use any chemicals in or around my tank.

From what I was told it is not possible for ammonia to go through the glass. I talk to and actual chemist who does this for a living before I posted the info. He said that ammonia molecules are smaller the water but not much smaller. He told me they are smaller by one AMU (atomic mass unit) I have no idea what that is but he says that it will not pass through the glass but that ammonia evaporates quickly so it can foreseeably evaporate and enter you tank. But realistically if you got windex in your tank the ammonia is the least of your problems. Plus I am not advocating using windex on your tank. I use warm water and a squeegee. and a brand new sponge never used before. My brothers tank was ruined one time by his girlfriend spraying hairspray while doing her hair.

porous glass is pretty expensive to make, and to answer that question not all glass is porous. So chemicals wont just leak through normal glass

iv never cleaned my tank or sprayed around my room with any type of cleaner like windex. i think the RODI unit should solve the problem. if i put out about 5-6 buckets of FW and let them sit many weeks will they distill themselves?

No. Chlorine will evaporate out, but not much else.
