I have a 72g planted discus tank in my living room and I've been seriously thinking of switching it to a FOWLR tank. I currently have 2x305 fluval canister filters, UV sterilizer and 2x48" flourescent light bulbs.

What do I need to buy to turn this FW tank to a FOWLR tank?
1. What type of filtration?
2. What type of live rock and how much of it for a 72g?
3. What kind of lighting?
Any info would help. Thanks!

Here's a pic of this tank.

i made the same change about 2 years ago. completely empty the tank out leaving nothing. fill the tank with tap water and add salt to the right salinity and set the water chemistr right (ph, alkalinity...all that stuff) add live rock and sand and upgrade your filtration. in my opinion, you can keep the fluval - it definitely doesnt hurt. just change the media to something like fresh activated carbon or chemi pure or something. thats a good place to start

Amount of rocks/sand combo is also a function of other filtration. If you have stronger filtration other than the rock/sand, you can use less of them. However, if your other filtration is weak, you may want more.

Sand and rock do very similar things in the terms of bio filtration except that rocks are easier to move around, clean by just blowing the detritus with a turkey blaster. Rocks provide solid hiding places for the fish which most of the reef fish like during sleeping. Therefore, here is my proprosal:
1 inch of reef sand for mostly good look and sleeping space for wrasse and other critters
50lbs of rocks for a clean look or 150 lbs of rock for a rock wall.
1 skimmer of NO less than $200(you can go $3000, it's your choice) Anything under $200 seems only a gimmick.
1 sump with refugium and modular remote deep sand bed
1 ro/di for easier life (less chance of algae bloom) even though I had reef tanks using tap water yet still looks good.
1 chiller and heater combo
N filter socks for quick change

Lighting. Since I am a LED manufacturer. Any new DT for myself will be ONLY LED now as I can create 16.7millions lighting colors for my own tank.

First off, your Discus tank looks absolutely beautiful! If you have the space, and $$$ you should keep it, and do a seperate sw fowlr.;) With that said.
Loose the fluvals, use a sump with a good skimmer. No rocks or fuge in the sump. Why? I've done fowlr with fluval, wet/dry with bioballs, sump/fuge, sump with rocks, and always have problems with algea, and or red slime. Including right now - I am removing the lr from my sump TODAY. Been doing fowlr for over 6yrs., and tried them all over that time. My reef simply uses a sump, skimmer, reactors, and has no problems with algea or red slime...
1) Tons of patience to cycle the tank properly. Do not rush this very important step.....
2) Sand bed 1" to 2" for astetics, and if you end up keeping wrasse that need to sleep & hide in it. Will also need sand sifters if you go with sand.
3) Overflow box
4) Sump, anything will do that can hold your skimmer(I like the Turboflotor Multi 1000 with Oceanrunner PH2500, not terribly expensive, works well, easy to use & maintain), heaters, return pump, and phosban & activated carbon if you choose to use them. That will hold the amount of water that will be syphoned down to it during a power outage.
5) No special lighting needed for a fowlr!!!!!!! Good bulbs work just fine....
6) Chiller only if you do not have an a/c, and the room the tank is in gets hot. Chiller will also add heat to the room, and you will be running the a/c to cool the room any way..
7) Choose your fish carefully after researching their needs, and compatibility.
8) (a) Good return water pump.
(b) Skimmer
(c) Heaters
(d) Thermometer
(e) Sump
(f) Overflow box
(g) Hosing for overflow box & return pump
(h) refractometer
There is more, but I've got to get going... Definitely DO NOT USE TAP WATER!!! PM me for more info, less I forget to come back to this thread.;)
