I'd been looking for specific shaving brush and Halemida algae species and found some online from a vendor in FL. They arrived today and are very nice, he even sent me more plants than I ordered at no charge. They came with live sand attached to their root clumps. There was some debris in the sand and the shipping water was stinky so I made sure to swish them in a jar of clean tank water before actually putting them into the tank. Boy, am I ever glad I did! Look what I found hitching a ride...a female Cirolanid isopod.

As Devious can attest, I tend to give most critters the benefit of the doubt. This is one I didn't...at least not before checking online to determine her identity. She is one seriously bad, blood-sucking, little critter!

And no, I did not flush her. She's in the garbage destined to spend eternity land-locked at the dump where she can do no harm.

how do you know there were not more of them in the plants you put in the tank? or eggs?

I suppose I can't know that for sure. I examined all plants closely and didn't transfer any of the water. Guess I'll be keeping my fingers crossed, a close eye on my fish and hope the little ones in her brood pouch didn't hatch on the trip up from Florida. :bunnies:

The bug cut through the flesh of her palm, dug in, and started to eat HER.
:Yikes: That is horrifying, I am already hesistant about sticking my bare hands into my tank because of the countless bristleworms (which are getting pretty big), but after reading that article I am seriously considering getting some thick gloves.

good luck. I would have at least QT'ed the plants, but most likely I would have tossed them all.

I think she's cute.

keep her in your tank it's ok just keep feeding her fish. Think of all the fish your could have in your tank and when people say wow what a beautiful tank you can reply "Those stupid things. Thats just isopod food"
