cleaning canister filter

for some reason when i clean my canister filter i make a big mess of water.
Is there a way i can open the filter with out the mess of water?
i mean i shut both of the filters off and wait a while, and still all the water flows out:tub:lol. one time i burned out an extension cord, it was scary.
