what should I do? I am in the planing process to upgrade to 120/150 and seeing help on flow. Any one has any suggestions or did any one use tunze? Personally I am not a plumber so all those PVC pipes that I am seeing on Closed loops are giving me headaches :(

Thank you all.

if you don't mind the size or look of the tunze's in your tank i would go with them.
it will save a lot of time in setting up your flow, and it will save in the electric bill.

otherwise get out the primer and pvc cement and open the windows ;)

I vote for Tunzes too, less power and less heat, a small computer back up battery can run two for hours. If you do decide to go with a large pump and close loop, stay away from Ampmasters(AKA Amp-eater).

On another thought, maybe I should not say Ampmaster are no good, I have three for sale:(.

my ampmaster ran at 1.3 amps at 4 ft height. i used a multimeter to measure it. which is pretty good for 2700GPH. tunze is great if your willing to spend the money. 300 dollars for a single output of 3000GPH plus a huge 4x4x4 powerhead. cannot direct flow to certian places. close loop is diffrent.

1.3 amps x 115V = calculated 150Watts (if the pump is running at a power factor of 1) good for you!!

Here is what mine AM3K on a close loop measured:

You should try one of these kill-a-watt gadget, it and the heat the AM3K creates changed my mine on this pump for sure.

The reason I am trying to avoid the amp closed loop is that I am useless when it comes to plumbing. Also I will need to drill my tank to get the closed loop install. Dont it? unless i go over the tank.

Well here is some math I was doing to justify the high price of tunze. lets say we donate .15c per KWh to our best buddy Con Edison.

To run Amp 2700 is will cost about $195 per year ( as cali_reef said amp needs 150w)

and it take about $15 per year to run 2 tunze (provided that you put them on a wave controller which I intend to do.

Than again as spyke mentioned the big size  which is not an welcome sight next in the tank. Hey spyke, when are you going to finish those diy tunze of yours?? may be I will buy it from you :)

Any thoughts from tunze users

Here is a picture on RC of a 90 gallon tank with two Tunzes:

This should help you determin if they will be too big for you.

In addition to the cost of the pump and running the pump, you will also need to consider the cost of few bulkheads, union ball valves for the pump, and misc. plumbing items to put a close loop together. PVC price has gone up significantly in the last 12 month :(. This still doesn?t give you a random flow in the tank unless you incorporate a motorized valve or few Sea Swirls.

Tunzes may give you an initial sticker shock but I think the final cost and less headache factors are worth it.

This is what one side of my closed loop looks like, there is the same on the other side. BHs, ball-flex tubing, nozzles. and its like a fire hose, not the gentle stream that covers your tank from a tunze.
You tell me what looks worse?
