magnesium question

i got them from bulk reef supply's! what is the difference between magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride? whats the pro's and con's????

Both parts are supposed to be mixed to create the product to be dosed. Not sure if i'm reading into your questions correctly, hope so.

Here are the instructions from the site.

Magnesium

Fill the last gallon jug ? to 4/5th with RO/DI water. This will make shaking and dissolving the solution much easier.

1. Take 5 level cupfuls of "Magnesium Chloride" and 3 level cupfuls of "Magnesium Sulfate" and mix together in the clean pail or bowl.
2. Add 1/3 of this mixture to the gallon jug and shake vigorously.
3. Repeat "Step 2" with another 1/3 of the magnesium.
4. Add the remaining magnesium and repeat "Step 2" until dissolved.
5. Fill the remainder of the jug with water, cap and label "Magnesium."

Mg Sulphate - MgSo4 (4 ions of sulphate sulphur and oxygen)
Magnesium Chloride - MgCl2 - 2 chloride ions (basically a salt)

If I remember correctly, both are mixed as a way to lessen the increase of sulfate and chloride counter ions.

According to Randy's Diy article, MgSO4 supp's have the potential to quickly increased levels of SO4.
MgCl2 supp's can also lead to increased levels of Chloride anion, but its increase is negligible to already prexisting high levels of Cl- in seawater.
