How do you measure your SG?

refractioner (Did I spell it right??? )
have a hand held Hanna meter to check PH and Temp

Your pH swings from 8.6 to 8.1??? That is a HUGE swing from day to night. that itself may have done it. (keep in mind that the pH scale is logarithmic).

no it doesnt max my PH is 8.3
glipper suggested it should be higher 8.4-8.6
I was asking if I did buffer it that high would the other fish be affected?

I seriously doubt that PH killed either fish. everyone I've spoken to agrees
PH of 7.9-8.3 is acceptable for a reef tank.
both fish came from same LFS both are tough fish to keep to begin with.
I seriously doubt it's my tank. I will Q/T my new Asfur (thanks Tom) for a few weeks till I'm sure

Both fish are tough to keep and even if they where eating it doesn't mean what they were eating was what they needed to sirvive in the long run. The Ph levels and the swing from night to day mostly wouldn't be a cause of death, specially since the fish had been in the tank for some time.

Fish do die from time to time for no reason that you can pinpoint in your tank, while other fish in the tank are just fine. You really don't know how they where collected and handled before you got them. Also in a reef tank there could be something, like a snail or some type of spore, that came out of the rock and both fish may have eaten it and that could be the cause of death.
