Hi Everyone,

I'm a newby at this...
Is it okay to keep dead coral inside your tank? These are probably coral skeletons that have been dead for awhile and dried out.

Thanks,
Alex

I used to have all dead coral in my FO tank. The thing is it is great looking when they are all clean but, after awhile they trap food and algae grows on them and you need to take them out and clean them off. I have slowly switched over to live rock even in my FO tank. Just my 2 cents

You shouldn't remove the dead corals to clean off the algae as it is playing a part in your tank. Alot of people do this and then they have problems with their tanks. Also if you have Tangs or Angels fish they pick at the algae on the corals, mine keep them very clean.

I never had trouble after cleaning the coral. BUT... How many tangs and angels did you have in the tank? I had 1 yellow tang and a pygmy angel and they couldn't keep up with the algae. Maybe I had too much dead coral or not enough tangs and angels. I haven't turned all of it back over to the LFS for credit yet. Let me know what kinds of dead coral you had and how many algae eaters you had in your tank. It does look cool having the dead coral and if they could keep it relatively clean I would rather have that than all live rock. Thanks for your help.
