Don't know about the live sand, but I wouldn't use Lava Rock in a reef tank. Lava Rock has been known to fule algae outbreaks in reef tanks. Furthermore, there can be lots of heavy metals and other minerals that could potentially be poisonous in a reef tank.

If you want base rocks, look at marcorocks.com

wow, the price on that sand is wicked. $24 for 30lbs of live sand and you don't have to leave the house. It's about 5-15$ off of commercial brand prices for oolithic/sugar fine generally. Not counting the add ins.
I've never used them of course, reviews look nice though.

Anyway, there are a few vendors that do in fact carry sand/substrate. I know for a fact HOF sells it, and am pretty sure other folks do too.

I think you just have to ask, not many vendors seem to put up a dry stock list.

No comment on the lava rock.
But marco rock is nice. If it's in stock its even better!
If you're not getting a huge load of it, I would try calling/emailing him to see if he has enough for your order.

Also, lots of folks on many reef boards seem to be breaking down for various reasons...
