I am going through some of this brown algae stuff too. Its growin in my tank like nuts now. Before it was just a few specs, but now, I dont know whats going on. I have a refugium, powerful skimmer. I think its my lights, I just upgraded to MH a few weeks back, so this is part of the algae bloom process according to reeferjoe. Hope it goes away quick!

well today i convinced my pals at New world to give me some macro and i got a littlle bundle of caulepera. i also adding a fighting conch to each tank(they should stir things up) i relized that the 2 gallons of unfilterized tap water that i aded to my tank must of aidd in the silcates and phosphates aswell as me using a couple of 5 gallon bags of catalina water which i just leaned are know for have levels of phosphates. well any way i am using stricltly tropic marine now and i have a purifier in the male. hopfule the adiditin of the macro will aid in this process.

what do you consider a heavy dity skimmer.

if deanos still has his back pak i miight just try and buy it from him

thing is i would need 2
one for each tank. so i could use the cpr bak pak on one tank for like a week and then switch it to the other tank and then just get rid of it or use it every now and then. llike you did

You're water was not too clean......pretty much impossible to do so.

IMO, This is normal for a new tank, i agree a good skimmer is needed, Do your monthly 25% water changes with RO/DI water DONT overfeed, lots of water movement and wait it out. Chances you will see different algae outbreaks for close to a year, they will go away. keep the temp where it doesn't move too much.
Dont add chemicals.

i meant my skimmer was pulling clear, nothing brown for weeks and weeks...
also did 40% weekly changes while nearing the end of cycling (i know you're not really suppose to).

Anything a LFS will say kills algae. NOT media like carbon, phospan which BTW doesnt work well in a filter you need a reactor.

It's not the lighting causing the abundance of brown algae, it's the nutrients fueling it. I have 2x250s + 3 VHO's with no algae problems and I kown other guys with 400w halides with algae free tanks as well. It all comes down to water quality.

Thanks for the shoutout Rich! LOL. I have over 400w on my 65g and the only algae I have is the green stuff on the glass.
