On Saturday I attended the annual LIRA collecting trip out by the Shinnecock Canal. The weather started off on the dreary side in the morning but had cleared up nicely by the 1:00 start time. They had a very nice turnout including Joe Y (from Atlantis), Sanjay, James (dickends), some members from Greg Schiemers family, Bob Stark from ESV and of course the nice folks from LIRA

Though many of the folks were already very knowledgable about the care of the fish they caught, great care was taken to get the fish right back into the ocean that weren't appropriate to be taken. Most folks only took a few specimens that they knew would thrive in their tanks.
I will admit that I was surprised how short of period of time the collecting lasted..less than 1 1/2 hours start to finish.

Since I was picking up a pendant from Sanjay, I followed a part of the group back to Atlantis, where I always enjoy the reef tank but rarely remember to take my camera along...
Joe is a fabulous host and although I've always joined in for the Behind the Scenes Tours while at Atlantis (don't miss this if you have the opportunity to visit!!), this one had a few extra surprises no doubt due to the special visitors
The unfortunate part is my camera battery died while I was taking pics of the reef tank or I'd have more to share. That said, a favorite part of the day for me was meeting the Penguins up close and personal (all of whom are named after characters on Seinfield..and some truly fit the bill..so to speak..lol). We all know Sanjay has a special gift for getting great results with corals and fish, but it seems that bond extends to the Penguin community also...they may have checked the rest of us out but it was him they wanted to take back to their nest..one piece at a time if necessary!!
