Well it's nearly time to set up the new tank and i was wondering what sized pump i should use as a return. The tank is a 36 Gal with an overflow box, 1" bulkhead and an external durso. Return line would be at approximately 48" of head. I have had problems with getting the water to drain quickly through this type of setup in a previous tank so i was hoping to get some advice from someone with a similar setup.
thanks

never get a rio and I would also avoid mags because over time they will corrode in your water. You should look into an Eheim or ocean runner pump approx. 700GPH

I've had a Rio for a # of years before it broke down, stuff got stuck in it and it stop for about 1 week and burned out.

I 2nd Rich on the Eheim as I've had one since 1987 and no problems what so ever, even had it run dry for days at a time, also they're very quiet.

I knew the mention of a rio pump would force a couple of replies. As this is going in my living room, noise is a real concern so i'll check out the ehiem.
And you think 700 gph is going to be ok for my drain size?

You could probably use a larger pump. I built a diy overflow box with 1 inch u tube using Lees specimin boxes, and drain into a sump, with a mag 7 running through a scwd back to the tank. I think the oveflow could handle double the gph and it's in a 7 gallon minibow!

Neither did I until the corrosion from it killed about 40% of my SPS tank. The day after I took it out things looked better and I haven't lost a coral since.

Just had a bit of a look online and it would seem the oceanrunner is a little closer to my price range for the moment. What do you think of them? any issues with corrosion or anything else?

Kind of on topic, but off a bit, I use an Eheim 1260 as my water pump cooling my PC. They are definately quiet... I hear the exhaust fan over the pump.
