I have both. Neither can replace either other IMO.
Sure the vortech's can make a wave on pulse, but the hum is very annoying, and it seems the pulse wears down the vortechs faster. A wavebox seems to have very little maintenance on the other hand, and is super silent. I can't hear it at night in dead silence.
But nothing can replace the undertow of the vortech, and the nice wide flow.

I was reading about how people have used a Wavebox to help suspend detritus (keeping it off the rocks and sand bed) .. I'm having a bit of trouble finding that sweet spot right now with my tank: enough to get the detritus off the rocks, but not so much that it's blasting my corals and anemones. I do like the MP10, and would obviously keep it on the tank, but I'm looking for some wave action for the sake of wave action, as well as the other benefits I just mentioned...

Ming, I agree with you on the short pulse mode... it's neat, but it's loud and I've noticed the dry side gets much hotter in short pulse.

I've also heard the Nano Waveboxes can create waves on a 125 gallon tank so if I were to upgrade I could definitely take it with me.

batt, what didn't your corals like about the wavebox? You're the first person I've heard say this.

I can imagine if the flow was setup too much that it would irritate corals, but that can be true with any powerhead.
