Yes bio balls and sponges should be removed slowly or it can create a problem in your tank.

I've run a 29 gallon reef without a skimmer for close to 2 years. In a tank that small, if properly stocked, water changes are sufficient. The tank only has 2 small fish (fiji damsel and a bi-color pseudochromis) which, I think, helps.

I think your low bioload helps the fact that the tank is skimmerless. Plus your good husbandry skills also keep things going well.

I would like to expand a little.

When I had my angler setup in the 12g tank I had no skimmer on the tank. I have however always run a skimmer on my reef.

My 2 week 5 gal water changes went as followed.

5 gallons out of the angler tank into the drain. 5 gallons of water from the reef into the angler tank, 5 new fresh gallons into the reef. That was done every 2 weeks and everything was fine. The problems start when people get lazy and stop keeping up with their maintenance so I always have a skimmer on my reef and that is why I suggest it to everyone.
