Strong - Quiet Return Pump?

Ok,

tank: 120gal 48 x 24 x 24

I have things rolling and need a return pump. I am placing the filters/refug in the basement. I will have approximately 10' straight up to the tank (couple of 90s in there). Can I get a few suggestions as to a "Good" , "Reliable", "QUIET" pump that will suplly me with enough turn over at that distance?

I'm not sure which model but check out the blueline series of pumps.

they are very quiet and don't add any heat to the water.

You'll definitely need a pressure rated pump. As others have said, Pan World, Blue Line, Iwaki or you can look into the new Uno series by MDM Sequence. Model would depend on what flow your looking for when it reaches your returns.

I just don't want to hear it humming away. If it is anything like 10K RPM SCSI hard drives when they are cranking away.... over time... it will drive me nuts. I wanna do this once and only once, so if I get what I want from the begining, I wont have to change later. If "Quiet" means more $$$ then so be it.

Running water is one thing, a constant whine / hissing sound is something else.

I am hoping to eliminate most of the water sound by running the pipes into the wall directly behind the tank, then down. I will be insulating the wall compartment as well.

For you SPS guys, I would like to do a mojority of SPS with some soft mixed in.... what is the targeted turn over? I have read on RC some people saying 15 times , some more, some less... What should my target number be for SPS?

Rich will you have sand or a BB tank? If you have sand I would shoot for a 30x turn over, in a BB system you should be near 50x or more (I have about 75x in my 120G). With 15x turnover you'll be left with a ton of detritus on your rocks and substrate leading to Phosphate problems and nuisance algae. I highly suggest seeing different flow systems with your own eyes before making your decision.

As for the pump, the Pan Worlds are pretty quiet.

Thank you for the info... WOW! your numbers are very different from what I have been reading. Let me ask you... how much of that 50X (I will be BB) are you passing through the sump? all of it? or are you factoring in the flow of a "Wave Maker"?

Rich, I am using penductors on my return line + 2x tunze stream 6100's for flow in my reef. The BB threads on RC also suggest a ton of flow. There is no wave maker factored factored in, this is actual flow

GRI pumps are extreemly quiet I would highly recomend them. They are quiet reliable but more expensive.
Also Sequence makes some great quiet pump they also have a great new line of low wattage pump.

I agree with Sean, GRI pumps are awesome but when I damaged mine neither Champion lighting (where I bough the pump from) or the GRI company itself were able to help me.

I never have that problem with my suppliers.
