Allowed? I'm sure it varies depending on the relationship between retailer and a particular wholesaler, but in general I think losses are the retailer's losses--one of the costs of doing business that most hobbyists don't factor in when deeming shops overpriced.

However, selling bleached corals to unsuspecting customers is wrong regardless.

There's nothing "prohibiting" a LFS to sell a bleached coral. IMO, if its bleached but still alive and severely discounted, and the buyer knows that its bleached and wants to take the chance to revive it, then its the buyers decision.

If they're saying its not bleached when it is, then you can probably stop listening to any advice they give you because they're trying to make a sale

Have to use your judgement

Have to agree with Reefman. Whether it was bleached or seriously stressed it is your final decision whether to risk it. The temptation of steep discounts sometimes screws up my judgement and I have regretted the purchase after the fact.

its a hard call for any1 to make w/o seeing what the coral look like at the time.

I always thought stress makes them bleach? So if you say it was bleached, it definetly was stressed. Either way I wouldn't buy stressed/ bleached corals.

I have bought bleached and browned out corals only to revive them to their former glory before.
I have also bought stressed corals which died on me
Its a gamble, and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Just don't take the bet if you think odds are against you.

Also, make sure you know WHY they're stressed. Sometimes stressed corals are because of bugs, and other times its the reefer's husbandry

I'm with Ming. Buying bleach corals is a gamble but you have the chance at getting nice corals very cheap. If the coral is pale in pigment (close to being white) it is bleached. As long as there is polyp extension it should recover give the proper conditions.
Ultimately it is up to YOU to educate yourself on the animals you are buying. With all the info available on this website and the many others like it, there is no excuse for ignorance (speaking in general).

Zany, don't sweat your purchase. You got a deal on a coral that you will probably make very nice. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't purchase a bleached coral not showing polyp extension though.
