As I posted in another thread, I've been having a small algae problem in my tank. Nothing drastic, just a couple patches of hair and an unidentified algae on a rock and on some of the glass as well as on my snails's shells. Most of it, however, grows on the slots of my overflow. As I was trimming it today, I realized one of my clowns again is missing and since last time I found it in the sump, I checked the overflow and thats where it was. While doing so, I realized that the algae on the slots was nothing. The inside of the overflow was covered in this algae ( its mostly the other type, the hair algae is confined to the one rock and a couple of other patches on the glass and snails ) so it was relatively easy to pull most of it. I figured it grows there best since the flow is slower. I thought that this might not be such a bad thing, if I manage to keep it confined to the overflow (which is the case for the past month for the most part ) since:
a.) it can act as an algae scrubber, absorbing excess nutrients which I can then remove by trimming, much like macro algae in a 'fuge ( which I havent been having much growth of );
b.) it can perform some mechanical filtration so I dont have to use a sock ( and risk killing the clown fish next time it goes for the ride )
c.) it can be a place for 'pods to reproduce and hide.
What do you all think ?
