I have a fission power skimmer on a 30 gallon tank, with about a 20 gallon sump, but noticed that it wasn't really doing too well, then I bought a odyssea ps75, and I'm running both now at the same time, I know it would have been easier to just get a well know skimmer, but the odyssea is so cheap I thought why not give it a try....

you could make a cheap skimmer work...it wont skim like the well designed/more expensive ones.....but for a 30g it can skim fairly well....you will have to test and tune to find its potential...maybe modding the impeller or making the air intake larger or changing to a whole new pump....sump water level makes a difference in performance and water fluctuation ..

Is running two skimmers at the same time overkill? Does one skimmer defeat the purpose of the other?

Thanks for viewing,
Edward

Hi sil3ncio
I run two Deltec APF 600 skimmers because I need that, however as mentioned by several members already, its not always necessary, especially if you are running two because one of them or both are not that good or insufficient for the job. There is a way to improve a skimmer performance without having to spend a lot o money, please see here and below is a sequence of another preparation done by Cesar Pinto of reefforum.net

Well its a possibility to improve the performance of a skimmer. Another possibility is the replacement of the propeller wheel with a needle wheel or a pump equipped with needle wheel. Personally I prefer needle wheels.
Well I hope this suggestion helps.

Cheers
Pedro Nuno ;-)
