Look up AquaProBuilder (Wingo) he is selling LED lights for the aquarium.

That looks pretty cool... I wonder if anybody has tried them, still kind of pricey at $300+ a bulb

What i like about it is that it has a shimmer effect just the same way mh does.

if you think about it the energy savings would offset the cost of the bulb plus no heat issues and no ballast all sounds pretty great.

Actually the ballast is built right into the bulb, so there is a ballast.

If you want LEDs for moonlights try searching "LED strip" on ebay. They have a lot of high powered LED strips for a very decent price.

get it off ebay..it's a lot cheaper. for $370 you can get a lot of LEDS on eBay. No offense to Wingo, over priced ??

There are few different versions of LED mogul type lights. One new "brand" was on display at MACNA and I'm not sure sure if these are the same. They are adapted from street lights and in fact one "brand" is just the street light and not very good for our purposes. The one at MACNA ( and maybe these???) looked to be a bit better, but they haven't been tested formally yet.

You're right manufacturers and custom builders probably don't even spend half of what they charge for the materials that goes into a LED fixture. They can do it though because there is little competition in the LED market.

The cost right now is way too high for something that is unproven long term. They haven't been around long enough to test thoroughly. Nothing is known about how long the lights will hold their intensity and when the bulbs will need to be changed or if it is going to be cost effectife to even do so.

They may look good now but down the road they might prove more costly than practical.
