it traps detritous and becomes the worlds best nitrate sponge.
if you like your nitrates in the 40-60 ppm range then crushed coral is the way to go :sgrin:
sand does not trap the same crud, it breaks it down. at least it's supposed to. that's a whole other debate.
I use sand and araggrite in my tank. The big problem with crush coral is that stuff, like waste and food, can get down in the sand bed because the crush coral tends to be larger and leaves spaces where sand doesn't.
