actually based on prices.. Upstate NY can save more money installing solar panels then the same household in southern cali.

For them to work you don't need a bright sunny day.

I've been toying with a solar theory myself. What if you took a solar panel(s) and placed it right behind your tank. It would draw power from the tank's lights. The solar panel would charge some sort of battery. The battery would be then used as a supplemental power source. I'm thinking if it could drop your electricity costs by 20%, it would be worthwhile.

If you did that with the cost of the panel and the amount of light that comes through the tank it would take aprox 500,000 years to pay back the money you spent on the panel, give or take a year.
Even MH lights put out no where near the output of real sunlight and you would be only using "wasted" light which would contact the panel on a 90 degree angle. :tongue1:

Hey Gang, I have solar pannels installed on my house. While they don't run my 120, they are used to defer my overall electricty expense. While they are costly, the best way for Long Islanders, is to work with and certified installer and get Lipa to pay for a good portion of the sytem based on their renewable energy program. I know they are reducing the credit they give you but worth a shot. You also get federal and state energy tax credit if you install. Something to think about if you have good southern exposure, as Lipa charges keep going up.
