Is there anyway that I can control, or reduce the humming noise created by my eheim return pump? Currently the pump is inside the refugium. The refugium is divided into 3 compartments:#1 where water from tank falls into (filled with cheato, 1 inch of sand, hermits and pods. #2 filled with cheato, hermits and pods. Compartment #3 return pump Eheim (inside refugium). t is a 35 Gl. tall glass tank.
Thanks in advance for your imput.

In sump return pumps that lay on the bottom of the sump without any type of buffer will always hum a little. I would unhook the pump and clean out the propeller area and propeller first as it might die down the humming noise. Ive always been told to take apart new pumps and clean the props if there was some humming or noise because packaging and debris from assembling sometimes gets stuck inside the propeller. If the sump is in a stand with doors you shouldn;t really hear it enough to bother you though. If not then work on a way of providing some sort of rubber or foam buffer between the pump and the sump. Anything Reef Safe works. Also, having the pump hard piped to the return line also can cause the vibrations to amplify some.

Try to hang the pump in the air. My brother-in-law had a problem with anal neighbors downstairs complaining about the humming. (How they could hear humming in their bedroom downstairs was a mystery) He basically hung his eheim with some fishing line from under the stand. It was about two inches off the sump and it was instant silence.

What else do you need. Just find one that best works for you. The only thing you are doing is placing an object between the pump housing and glass. That is called a damper.
Anything will work. You can place pieces of filter floss around any place that comes into contact with the pump.
