My first attempt of owning a clam.
I ended up with a Black & gold. Very cool.
Put her in the tank, after a while she opened up a bit.......a couple of hours later the shell was empty & my hermits & snails we all on top of her.
What happened?????!!!

Man I bummed...:(

i am not an expert at clam ownership but in your case i'm almost 100% sure the crabs/snails were acting as scavengers once the poor clam already bit the dust. unless of course your hermit crabs are like my old hermit hermie (the 'common hermit crab that grows huge and is NOT reefsafe) - but the little scarlets/blue leggeds should be harmless to a clam.

sorry to hear of your loss.

I'm going to agree the clam might have been dead before they ate it
when they sense danger they usually pardon the pun but "clam up"
I put some snails I got yesterday in my tank, some stuck right to the glass a few didnt and wound up on the substrate... well they are empty now
Sorry about your loss

the clam died an hour after it was placed in the tank, that's very unusual.

marrone, could be right was it acclimated, clams are pretty tough though, I'm surprised that happened.

LOL Deep....

Marrone:
Yes. Floated for about 1/2 hour, then dripped for about an 1 hour....before place in the tank.

JHale:
The clam looked ok & started opening & closing as soon as it was placed in the tank.
Watched her for a bit, then started setting up for a fight party I had last night (btw Roy Jones does suck).......
I noticed 1 hermit picking at the shell (she closed & opened)......about an hour or 2 later no clam inside the shell.:headache:

I lost one of mine too, I am so sad now.

As soon as I put it in my tank, they were wide open. I was so happy last night but this afternoon, I saw the empty shell. I hope rest of my clams survive.

see, you have to understand, clams gets bother really easily, when they are that small, you guys have to understand they slime up a coat that a fish or inverts and scent as death, it's their stress coat, therefore your hermits and skrimps attacked, the clam is helpless even if it closes up, because they arent closed 100 percent, a cleaner shrimp if anyone owns one like to pick at clams, that's why i made sure i didnt own a shrimp, my clam opened at the swap and it's alive in my tank, you have to keep them somewhere bristle worms and hermits dont attack. my crocea i do fresh water dip on it only in the morning and hide it even if the clam is alive, it gives off a smell of rot. until the clam is settled in and feels good then the smell of rot goes away. man ppl need to read up on clams before they get one.

You FW dip your clams in the morning?! If what I read on RC in lots of posts was correct, the only time you should FW dip a clam is if it has pinched mantle or its a last attempt to save the clam.

The clam I got from MM went straight into my tank and nothing bothered it at all. Most bristle worms aren't predators, they're scavangers. I never read or heard about a clam giving of a "smell of rot" in its "slime"????? Where'd ya get the info some, would make for an interesting read. :D

I havent heard of the "slime of death" either

BTW FW dips are only for pinched mantles as a last case to get rid of pyramid snails.

My previously owned Deresa, Maxima, and Crocea never had a prob, 30 min acclimated and in they went, no probs

Im having a weird feeling maybe the guy that sold Stingnyc the clams put in some Ugly/unhealthy clams in the GB and thought noone would notice. I'll prbly get hated on for sayin it, but there it is

read up on RC, nothing called slime of death, you have to know everything stressed will put out slime, and the one the clams put out attracts bristles, sorry DRZL everyone has their own methods, my clam didnt die, other people's did so if you say drop them in and they will be safe im sorry, those clams were in steve's tank for 3 days, if they didnt die then why should they now?
