I have a 55g tank with mostly softies, I find that even one mj600 with mod pointing up produces too much flow, can I make the propeller smaller like cutting it to get less flow?

IMO I would mess with it. I think you would have better results if you messed with the angle. Try positioning the MJ differently, i.e make the flow bounch off the glass.

I would not cut it. I highly doubt it would be balanced afterwards. Unless you don't mind the possibility that you may have to scrap it...

Can you fit the mod on a MJ-400?? Did it come with 2 props or just one?

How do you know you have "too much flow"?

it has to be perfectly balance after it is cut? never thought about that.
I think the mod should able to fit on a MJ 400, but I only have a 600.
how do I know there is too much flow? well, that's a good question. I think it is from the movement of the corals, also based on calculation, the mod produces like 1600gph(from the web site)+about 300gph from the return pump from the sump =1900gph, so to my 55g tank, is it too much?

1600GPH is with the big prop (the kits I have seen come with two prop options) and on a MJ-1200. I doubt it's 1600GPH.

I don't know if it needs to be PERFECTLY balanced. But I bet it needs to be close for it to last.

What kind of corals? LSP, SPS, Softies?

I made the mistake of taking a MJ-1200 w/ a mod, and putting in a 4-quart pot. Almost all the water in the pot was on the floor before I could pull the plug out of the wall. DOH :splitspin

I just re-read the question. Did you use the bigger or smaller prop ? I had the bigger one on and it was alot. I placed mine towards the bottom on the back and point it up and slitghly inot a corner. This spread out the flow and the I moved some rock work in front of it. Now it gives alot of surface agetation and make a rolling flow from the top of the tank to the bottom.

yeah you only have like 600 gph there. if you want to slow the flow around the tank just place a rock in front of the powerhead.

where do you get 600gph from? the flow for the mj 600 is 160 and the mod"will increase the flow by up to 10X"(quote from the web site), maybe I should discount it to only 7X, (maybe even less?) it should be still over 1000gph, and I will cut the flow for the return pump to half due to the loss, 1000+150=1150gph, is this too much for my tank?

The MJ-1200 is 295GPH and the MJ-600 is 160GPH.

So if the 1200 makes 1600GPH, the 600 should make around 868GPH

Does this sound plausible?

Not really because they don't use the same prop. the MJ 1200 eco mod comes with 2 propellors. 1 is 1200gph and the other is 1600. the others only come with a single prop the mj 600 only goes 600 gph.
