I have a 75 reef with a 20 g sump/5 gal fuge and 2.5 gal HOB Fuge with chaeto. My deep sand bed isnt very deep in terms of nitrate export since its only around 2.5 inches, but i have a dsb 5 gal fuge and the other fuge has chaeto so i was thinking aestetics and more room would be viable. I have around 100 lbs of LR. I use phosban in a TLF reactor and have an RODI system with 0 tds and a coralife super skimmer 125 that does a pretty decent job. I had zoas an acan and a candy cane before the swap and after the swap i added a pair of dendros thats already made a baby and 2 more lord howensis acans with about 4 heads 2 rics and some more zoas colonies. My nitrates are about 0, phosphates 0 ph 8.3, nitrite amm 0, calcium around 475. Im having a little bit of a problem with hair algae on the rocks and some slight diatom on the bottom. My lps are fine and eating a ton and most of my zoa colonies are open but one or two that had been doing really well have some slight algae on them that is causing them to not open. I have tried squirting it with an eye dropper to blow it off and that has seemed to work a little but one or two colonies have it alittle too tough and arent opened. What can i do flow is a koralia 2 and the return from my 900 gph mag 9.

In my opinon a 2.5 gallon fuge is to small to be of use for nutrient removal in a 75 gallon system, and 2.5 inch sand bed is to shallow to be useful for nitrate reduction (to shallow to create an anerobic enviroment, a deep sand bed is 4+ inches).

How are you measuring phosphates?

The other thing is that if you have an algae problem you have a phosphate nitrate problem. Even if your tests are reliable and they indicate zero, thats only because the algae uses it up before you can test for it.

What do you feed your tank, and how often?

I agree...You must have a phosphate or nitrate problem...Check your test kits...I foud thatmany of the reagent test kits are HIGHLY inacurate...Are you using any amino acids or coral foods ie...phyto, roti,...?

i wish i could remember where i read it, but hair algea can live on fractions of a part of nitrate. i had a serious tank take over of hair algea when i first got started. i put a phos reactor in and it helped a little. then i put a denitrator in and now its all gone and my nitrates are 0. i know i have recommended it in a couple of other threads but it works so well. www.aquariepure.com i practicaly sound like a sales rep, but my tank is thriving now. good luck. o, dont blow the hair algea. you have to pick it out.

i have barely any fish. a pair of ocellaris clowns and a royal gramma. i feed a half cube of a frozen food like prime reef every other day. I changed about 30 gallons of water within the last 10 days. The polyps still arent opening
