I have a lighting fixture over my turtle tanks. Its one of those combo fixtures that has two incandescant fixtures and one standard fluorescent fixture. Anyways, I was putzing around with the tank and the fixture accidentally fell in. The incandescent light bust but the CF in the other side did not. Now I dont know if the whole fixture fell in the water, or only the bulb touched the water and bust ( it was on and hot ). I unplugged it of course ( the GFCI didn't trip which is strange ), dried it and got out the glass and remainder of the bulb from the fixture and the tank. Now, how can I ascertain whether the fixture is still good? I dont want to plug it in and get electrocuted but I'd rather not have to buy a new one if it can be avoided. Of course if there is no safe way to test it, I'll chuck it but I figured if anyone knew it would be someone here.

If the GFI didnt trip (and is in proper working order), then the electronics of the light probably didnt touch the water (thats the purpose of a GFI outlet). Weather or not something got busted when it fell is a different story. Im sure you will be fine if you throw another bulb in and test it. Just be ready to unplug it if something happens. As long as the cord isnt freyed you wont get electrocuted.

Yeah the electronics in the light should be good,so long as those turtles are freshwater ones. Water does not conduct electricity, without electrolytes(forget what they're called), so dry it out and the fixture should still be good. I've dropped my lamps into my turtle tank a bunch of times and so far no adverse effects. Though if it was salt water then toss the fixture now as the salt could cause shorts and such.
