I think reading through this thread would be a good idea before going through the trouble. This is not anything "new" infact its been around along time. there is are alot of rreasons that skimmers and refugiums with Cheato took off and this "turf scrubber" method did not.

I haven't read through the entire thread but I definitely will.

As Arati pointed out it would behoove anyone giving this a try to read through it entirely.

I've noticed that SantaMonica's posts on reefers cafe are similar to his posts on bostonreefers.org with just updated screen shots promoting the implementation of the turf scrubber and quotes from other members from various sites.

Caution is all I say. Algal filtration can certainly work, but it is not as simple or straighforward as it seems. Also, the author of that thread has been trolling lots of boards with a fanatical zeal that rivals religion-as if he has discovered or invented something new. In fact, this an old system that has been around for a few decades and there is a reason not many reef keepers use it. If I were going to set up a turf scrubber, I certainly wouldn't be following this guys recommendations. Check out the seminal work of Walter Adey on the subject, and perhaps contact Morgan Lidster at Inland Aquatics. I'd also read the very long thread on this ( started by the same guy) on Reefs.org where he is challenged by people who know what they are talking about.

So what are the negatives of this system? This seems like it would be a great addition to my sump since the space I proposed for a fuge is soooo small.

+1

He may be annoying and by no means original but the only criticisms I've read are attacking the guy and that the turf may discolor water which is why we have carbon. I wouldn't stop water changes or ditch my skimmer like he suggests but it is a simple and intriguing concept. If what he says is right then a few pipes and a screen added to my sump can solve alot of problems with seemingly no risk, seems worth a try IMO.

I like the idea too and would like to do one. I am planning to run carbon anyway so am not worried about the color though I don't think it would be a problem anyway.

I have not read many solid pros and cons. I wonder if they are so great why don't we see more of them. Is it just because manufactures have not been marketing them?

If any one plans on building one let me know. Maybe we could go in on ordering materials or something. I like the design that has two T5s on each side.

Im thinking it might not be to effective, or the design isn't as simple as it seems, idk it seems like it should be more popular.

Well... So from what I understand the key thing is turf algae growth. The only downside I can possibly see if growth time for this algae. It has to grow to a size quickly and adequately to take in all the nitrates and detritus right?

From what I understand from the reading i have done is that ample light (2-T5) and correct flow is all that is needed. The initial time to establish a bed of algae could be a down side.

I also read a down side was it would produce voluminous abouts of copopods. The author implied that was a bad thing? I thought those were a good food source?

One more question. If to do it correct requires 2 lights and a pump I would that be more energy consumption than a skimmer? Would LEDs be inexpensive enough in that color range to make their use feasible?
