So i'm finally getting around to setting up my permanent 29 gallon tank. I was going to use my second 29 gallon tank as the sump, however I just measured it out and realised that it doesn't leave me with much room to manuver under the stand. So i'm going to get a 20 long for a sump.
Now the question is what do I do with the other 29 gallon tank?
I was thinking of drilling 2 holes in both 29 gallon tanks and connecting them with some flex pvc, so fish would be able to swim between the 2 tanks. Do you think this would be a good idea or would the second tank become a detrius trap? In this imagining only one of the 29 gallon tanks would drain into the sump. And the return would pump into the drainless tank. So left tank drains into sump, sump pumps to right tank, right tank is connected to left tank.

Or do you guys think I should just keep it simple and just put the spare 29 gallon aside?

Also one last question what would be a good in sump skimmer for a 29 gallon tank?

make it an ATO container? That could work. Would need a glass top for it though to prevent my dog from drinking out of it.
Hmm or I could use it to raise something else. Like use it to raise crayfish or other freshwater feeders.

could make it into another tank drained to the 20g long sump.

Make a L shape so its a room divider, one against a wall and the other is a peninsula style with the drain on the 12" width side drained to the share sump with teh 15g as Qt and 10g as ATO.

oh yeah one important bit of info, only 1 of the 29 gallon tanks is reef ready. 1 is not currently drilled, so I would need to drill the tank if I were to set it up as a second tank.

Why would the second tank be a detritus trap, just treat it the same as the other and it should be fine, the only difference I would think is that the drainless tank might get surface scum, there are a few power filter with surface skimmers if you want to run them with carbon or something.

Maybe a separate tank or a sort of specialty tank, like try to breed something that isn't commonly bred.

frag tank?

Maybe get into freshwater or brackish?

Terrarium?

Just throwing out ideas.
