Is it bad that i dont use a filter sock?

lately I have had no filter sock and let the water pour right into the sump where there is nothing, but by the time it goes over the first baffle to where the skimmer and phosban is and out the return there are zero microbubbles. Is it bad that theres water pretty much splashing into my sump even though theres no microbubbles in the main tank. I was thinking it would definitely affect ph and co2 somehow. I was thinking it was a good idea to cut down on nitrate traps.

I dont think its bad at all....I know a lot of reefers that dont run socks...they run there drain right into a container of live rock rubble...this breaks it up. In addition, they clean there sump out a little more frequently...other than that no issues that I can see....its maintanence one way or another...:splitspin

how do you clean a sump? also how do you remove sand from a sump if it had a fuge with a dsb.

i dont use socks rather a very course filter matieral and i change them every week as to bleach the others to not have nitrate factories.

In some regards i feel its beeter not to use one, because they trap alot od debrit that would be romoved byy skimmer and turn into nitrates. However as others mentioned sump can collect alot of debrit as well tank will not be as clear, in most cases

I am a huge fan of filtersocks I dont know how anyone can truly agrue that they do more harm than good if you are so concerned - change them often
I use two 7'' filtersocks and my protein skimmer still pulls out some really nasty stuff I would consider the two the backbone of my system

I like using them as well. How do you clean yours? I wash mine by hand with tap water, than let them dry and rinse with RO water before I swap them out. It's a pain in the ass!!!

i use them as well, dont wnt to clean sump of debris all the time, i need to change them every 3 days, i wash mine in washing machine with bleach and let air dry

does washing with bleach make it sterile. im guessing its safe for the tank
