I was gluing baffles in my new sump. I just realized, the white GE Silicone that I'm using may not be reef safe.

It's the one with out the biocides. It has titanium dioxide to make it white. Do I need to tear it all apart and start over with clear stuff??

I'm curious...why the claim that type I is not aquarium safe? Is there proof of this, I've used it on a few occasions with no issues; I know it says it on the label but so did Southdown. As long as the silicone used is 100% with no mold or mildew agents whats the fear based on?

If its not pure silicone and they start adding other chemicals into it it will leach into the tank. Same reason alot of people don't use certain types of resins or glues and the same reason people don't use a silicone adhesive to build their tanks. They can say its 100% silicone even though it might be 99.900% silicone. That .19% of a chemical added can be fatal or problematic in the tanks.

Better safe than sorry. And people have had problems with 100% silicone in their tanks without the "for aquarium use only". It just wasn't detailed that it was 100% the problem of the bad silicone. And southdown started adding "not for aquarium use" as a legal purpose. It wasn't meant for aquarium use and if they descided on changing their formula.... anyways.
