So 1 of my fish came down with ich, so I moved him to the QT tank. I am running an aquaclear 50 on the tank. I only kept the sponge in there. After medicating the tank, I noticed the water was crystal clear 4 hours later (it should have been blue.) The sponge in the filter removed all the meds. So I removed the sponge. Should anything be kept in the filter on the QT tank?

What Medication are you using? Unless the sponge is a poly pad or has carbon in it I doubt it would remove all the medication you place in the tank. Also if you're treating with copper you need to get a test kits and measure the level, to make sure you have the correct level.

All I had in there was the sponge (no carbon, no ammonia pad.) So it's ok that the sponge soaked up all the meds? I am using a product called quick cure. Should I just keep the light off? The tank is kind of in a dark corner of my basement.

The water was blue when I left at 2pm today. When I got home at 6pm, the water was crystal clear and the sponge (brand new) was blue. It seemed to have soaked it all up.

The sponge could absorb some of the medication but not all of it. It's best to remove the sponge altogether and just run the filter. I would leave the lights on, as when the lights go off the fish will go to sleep and the ich will take a great toll on the fish. With the lights on the fish is more active and will be able to fight off the ich better.

Thanks for the tip. I'll move to copper tomorrow since I medicated for today and don't want to mix the medications. Actually, I'll just put the sponge back in and have it remove the meds so I can treat with copper faster.

I just learned about "KICK-ICK" from a fellow reefer thats reef and invert safe. This is definitely something to consider since ick may actually be shedded off from the fish's body as it rubs agains either sand or the rocks --- this means that your tank would have "trace" ick also and the next fish with a "weak immune system" that comes across it may be subjected to it. Its like a remedy to the underlying problem.

Once again, I just learned of this from a fellow reefer, has anybody else actually tried it on their tank? Any suggestion?

by they way, i just want to add to the above post that KICK-ICK does not contain copper and therefore is reef and invert safe. so once again, does anybody have any opinions about it? let us hear it!

Thanks Danny, I also read about a product called "Herbal Ich Attack" by Kordon that is supposed to be reef safe. Anyone here have any experience with "Kick-Ich" or "Herbal Ich Attack?"

I coppered my QT tank this morning but if I can find a safe med to use in my show tank, I would use it to prevent any of my other fish from getting ich. My tank is FOWLR, so I would only have to worry about killing off the live rock. I do not have any corals to worry about.

I recently used Kick-Ich in my reef tank. It worked, though it took the full 15day treatment period to do so. I havent had an ich come back yet and it did not effect any of the other reef inhabitants.

I would recomend it for mild cases.

So basically they are ich medications which are less potent hence taken longer to work. I placed an order for the Herbal Ich Attack because 2 trusted sources told me it will not kill off live rock and it does not contain copper. I will use it my tank to prevent the spread of ich since no other fish show signs of having ich (as of this morning.)
