Is it possible there was something wrong with the zoos and the asterinas were just cleaning up dead tissue? I have hundreds in a thriving sps tank with no ill effects. The ones in my softie tank actually get eaten by the paly's when I knock them off the glass.

Normally I would chaulk it up to a sick coral, but this is really not what is happening here. Maybe for others that is the case. Myself and C are very aware of each coral in tank daily. At night one of us is always looking at the corals with the lights out/flashlight on and during the day as well. The star was noticed on the colony and within three days there was noticable damage of healthy zoas gone. Open one day, gone the next. If they had been closed up for more than 24 hours before disappearance I'd think otherwise. An unhealthy coral would show signs of stress.

Tonight I noticed a star climbing into my Watermelon zoanthids, which is the largest colony. It has more than quadrupled in size since we put it in the tank. I know where the star went in.. while the zoas were open.. I will see tomorrow what happens when the lights go back on.

I honestly don't know why it is such a hard thing for people to believe and honestly I'd love to not be experiencing this right now. We just introduced a lot of new zoas into the tank that are just starting to thrive and grow. If these things get a hold of them they will make quick work of them, I have seen what they already have done in less than a week to one set of zoanthids... I don't want to see anymore damage.

Sybil, I believe you. Just looking at all possibilities. What color are these asterinas? I've seen posts about gray and brown ones eating coral. The ones I have are the common whites. Mine come out in force under the actinics at which point we harvest them fro a friend with Harley's. Manually remove what you can and the shrimp will get the rest.

Kris, as Devious had posted this link earlier...

the ones I had issues with were the smaller ones, that either have a green or blue hue to them, and there is NO doubt they ate many of my prized zoas.
There is some concern about the white ones, but not near as much as the others. I have also seen the larger typical looking asterinas that have a colored 'hue' to them, and I wouldn't trust those either anymore.

Been there done that, have Harleys now.
Sybil, I feel for ya, sorry you lost those zoas :(
