Can anyone tell me what good practices are in place for selling goods on this forum?

I thought it was generally known that the first person to respond to a thread has a first right of refusal within a reasonable time frame set by the seller and first to paypal threads should be avoided and do not follow "good" practice.

Just thought I would take a poll since I just lost out on a 120 tank on RC after I was the first to respond to the thread. Unfortunately for me the seller posted a first to paypal thread and I lost it since I wasn't following the thread closely.

Please dont compare this forum to RC... :tired: i've met a bunch of cooL guys here and have never even (successfully) bought or met anyone from Rc... :sigh1: I've observed that the core people here have some sort of 'word-of-hoNor' ... so yes, it is first post, first served!

Good luck ...and if it's a real good bargain, I'll probably beat you to it :joke: :tongue1:

Yep, it's basically the first person to respond who has dibs. You can also send an private message to the seller, but post on the thread that you sent a PM, so that everyone else is aware that someone has dibs.

Generally it's curiosity to offer it to the first person that response but alot of people responsed and then back out leaving the seller holding the bag, so you just need to use good judgement in selling. I'm not sure that first to paypal should be avoided but since most everyone here are local I'm not sure it's need. What maybe need is to have the person Paypal you to hold the item.

inkblue thanks but I lost that 120 to someone on manhattan reefs I'm not blaming him he just followed instructions from the seller. I was the first to respond to the thread and a few minutes later he puts up first to paypal.

By the way you're first in line on the barr aquatics overflow box LOL:)

Inkblue I hear you on that. Many nice people I've pm'd. I'm around all week. How about Thursday? I'll pm you my address in the city or maybe we can meet somewhere that's mutually convenient.

Ecfencing the problem is you said you might be interested in the 120gal tank. To a seller this means you are going to be a PITA and bargin and ***** about the condition etc... :D If you want it, say I'll take it.
I've had a few experiences selling corals in the past where the first person to respond said they're interested and the next guy to respond said I'll take it. Guess who got the coral ;)

IMO you can't sleep on good deals. What the worst case senerio? You can always do a chargeback on Paypal if you aren't happy.

I wanted to sell a metal halide pendant, and when i posted it i got four people who said they would take it. I made a deal with the guy who was first on the list and the evening he was supposed to pick it up he called and backed out. In the end they all backed out for various reasons and the pendant is still sitting in my basement. So I'm all for "If you want to buy it, SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!"

First to post, respond = first right of refusal - within reason -

If you snooze you lose - I have noticed that both Jackson and I state up front, for instance, I am holding for X person til X time, if not, next tin line.

You have to keep it real, otherwise people wil take advantage - Jackson, I agree with you man - sell it to who will buy it and really wants it - BUT you have to be respectful (which you are).

If people want to haggle, you give them the numbers - people are coming to lok at this tonight for price as is - if it's a reasonable price, they'll take it, if not, no one will, so,

Good luck and sorry if things didn't work out - also, not taking it personal like Fireman said is a good idea

sux that you lost it , but if it was a first to paypal type sale, you should at least report the thread to RC mods. there is a sticky on every selling forum; people are not allowed to sell like that.

Its just business! If I am selling something and people call dibs, that means nothing to me. The first person to give me a concrete offer ie money in ma pocket gets it. If a buddy of mine happens to need that particular item, he has dibs. I take care of my friends and family first. Money comes second. As for "the first to paypal", I know it sucks but you can get that back quite easily through paypal.

As for comparing RC to MR - dont!!! Its not the same at all. MR is a tightly knit family of reefers. Most know what the others look like. They drink together and hangout together. And most of all, they help each other out. Sure RC has more members and more info, but RC aint got nothing on MR!!!!

that is the truth! much less likely to have someone flake on you here since most ppl know each other

For the record I wasn't interested in being a PITA just wanted to make sure of the condition. My pm to the seller which was made public indicated that if I had not known about the first to paypal post he made. A courtesy pm was all that I asked. Something like this... "Hey Ernie you were the first to express an interest albeit not a strong interest I'm going to take the first person to paypal me. If you don't respond in the next 0.5 hours or whatever time frame the seller desires then you lost your opportunity....."

Lesson is: You snooze and you loose and also for the recored I'm not p****od at the manhattan reefs member who bought the tank.

I would like to buy a 120 so if there is anyone out there selling one let me know.

Thanks.
