Overflows, extremely noisey and tried everything

My tank has two overflow boxes with a durso pipe upside down. The garglling noise is rediculous. There is a small airhole on top of the pipe, but if its totally unclogged their is no noise but water fills to high in tank, but if its clogged its insanely noisey. I tried reducing flow in the sump with a piece to cause some back pressure (doesnt help) I tried foam pads around pipes (doesnt work)

Any suggestions?

stick a airline tubing into the hole on the durso...make sure its long enough to be submerged....
also add a ball valve/gate valve on the drain to regulate flow..

Hey Auto, I added the ball valve and find that it either doesnt help at all, or reduces flow so much that it completely stops the overflow system and this is even with fin adjustment.

As far as the air tubing, the only problem is the hole on the top of the pipe is like the size of a molding nail head so not sure how I could get tubing in there. Perhaps glue it over the hole or tape it. and than run the line into the water. I will try this

Is this what you had in mind? Insert airline into the entrance part?

In mine its very similar but their is a nail sized hole on top of the cap. If totally open water goes over the hole box

J, Ball valves don't work as well as gate. Gate has finer adjustment.

jl in the top cap of it drill the hole and slide tubing down itm i put a air control valve on line to dial noise in

i drilled a 1/8" hole on top of that pvc cap, then inserted RO tubing with a RODI ball. valve..solved my problems

I used a plastic coffee stir in mine - seriously - instead of tubing because my hole was too small. Also, I switched to vinyl flex tubing and all the noise was gone.

ahhh drill a larger whole and insert the tube in there. Im also going to have to get the valve so the air intake can be controlled. Any suggestions where to get that? Ive seen them on powerheads before, so assume LFS rather than a hardware store

just submerging the tube deeper into the durso or pulling it out more works too...i dont have a valve and it does not gurgle or surge.....you just need to find the sweet spot...which you will notice when you move the tubing....soft airline worked for me..

yep lfs will have them, ive never put a ballvalve on my drain, just leave a area where something can build up and get stuck

how far the tube goes in depends on how much water u want going in.
the further the tube, the less water. this will need to be done to achieve the least noise.
i like the stockman standpipe better. it takes up less space in the overflow.
the tube i have is not the regular air line tube size. its bigger n made of thicker material.

tip: cut the tube(the end going in the pipe)at an steep angle to fine tune the air allowance. airvalve can get clog over time.

well...basically...you just cut some tubing (i used airline tubing)thats maybe 6-8" long and test how deep it needs to go until it stops gurgling...if theres excess...then you can trim it down...the tubing is shorter than what you see now...

just my 2 cents, its a bad idea to restrict your drain with any kind of valve. it just increases the chances of clogging your drain line. also, back pressuring your pump can make it a bit loud in my experience, and people say it shortens the life of the pump.

you might just want to try a less powerful return pump, or teeing off the return and putting in a valve so you can throttle back the pump with the excess flowing back through the tee to your return chamber.

as for aspirating the durso, there is a 'sweetspot' with the airline tubing. you can try raising and lowering the tubing until you find it.

anyway, what kind of pump are you using and whats the head height on it? (probably should have been the first question.

Thanks some real good advice from everyone, I have inseted airline, and sealed around line with tape and put line in a knot as if im dripping and greatly reduced noise.

The pump in an internal Dolphin and not sure of make, because I bought the whole setup from an MR member but will look into it.

As far as teeing off return. I like this Idea, especially with summer coming up as a feed for my chiller without adding an additional pump and reduce return flow

do you have pics of your sump?
how deep are your drain pipes submerged in your sump? keep em 1 inch below or outta the water to keep pressure off. how many returns do you have beside the ones in your display tank? do you have any going back into the sump? ex; from your uv or reactor or chiller?
