I have and AP24 with PC lighting with primarily zoa's, with candy cane, star polyps, xenia, cloves, toadstool, sun corals, electric flame scallop. I do weekly water change of 5 gallons with Tropic Marin salt, no protien skimmer just filter floss that gets replaced every 3 to 4 days. I've be hearing and reading about the benifits of Iodine for softies. Would it be recommended to Test for Iodine? If so what test kit is recommended. Next is if I have to dose what Iodine product is recommended?

If your doing water changes that often you probably dont need to add anything,its in your salt mix.If you think you should add iodine be shure to test first,it can be toxic if levels become too high.Salifert or API are good kits,API kits are usually cheaper and simpler to use though some say not as accurate,but if its easier you might be more inclined to use it which is good!

I dose Lugols in my 120g SPS tank & my 180g + 102g LPS system on a weekly basis. I don't test but I skim heavy. Corals do look better. In my 12g nano, I only dose once a month since there is no skimmer in this tank.

Note to anyone reading this: It is NOT recommended for novices, beginners, or even intermediate level reefers to dose like the above. Expert reefers (like Warren) have certain abilities to detect subtle changes in their systems when levels get too high. As Dave said, slightly high levels of iodine can be toxic to the critters in our tanks. So the proper way to dose iodine is ONLY if you test your parameters for iodine levels first.

So according to Russ I should dose 1 bottle a week then test at the end of the month :biglaugh::biglaugh:. API Test it is and Lugols only if absolutly necessary. For the most part weekly water changes should suffice. Thanks for the information.

I should not state that dosing additives should be done without testing for levels. Iodine if overdosed can cause ammonia to be lethal if there are any trace amounts in your system.

Good comment! I did some research on Nitrogen triiodide. Sounds really kool!
I'll go easy on iodine dosing... I used to dose 48 drops once a week (after the PWC) which is recommended 4-drop/gallon dosage, but now I do only 12 and that has no (visible to me) negative effects.
