hey guys wats up. im new here. i was informed by deanos and joseney about this site and i thank them very much its great here. i like helping people out. as we said last night cause its like people at petsmart, petco that mess everything up.. like the guy at petco said to me all i would need is a canister filter and a skimmer and some live rock.

CANISTER FILTER = NITRATE FACTORY = MORE WORK

hehe anyways anybody no what else i can do. im adding about 300 watts of light soon. 1 MH bulb 175 watts and 2 75watt pc fixture to this tank. then im going to need some help picking out some softies...

currently its 29 gallons
20lbs live sand
20lbs lfs sand
25-30 lbs of live rock
prizm HOB skimmer
2 powerheads

fish
-blue hippo tang
-yellow tang
-osc. clown
-goby (yellow face with 1 blue neon strip on both sides of his face)
-2 nas. snails
-1 reef hermit

ammonia - 0ppm
nitrite - 0ppm
nitrate - 5ppm
ph - 8.3
temp 80f

what can i add to get more water agitation on top theres a build up of some white stuff. its hard to explain. not thick stuff either. i have one powerhead pointing up so its pushing it all to one side. and one pointing down at the live rock.

any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

Hmmmm I used to get that "oily" crud at the top too, maybe some more surface agitation would do that trick.

Your lighting going to be nice for the softies and even give you the option to add some SPS later on if you want to.

Only real problem I can see is the fishload is really high for the tank. The tangs are too much for a 29g IMO. There more fish there than in my 65 .

When your ready for some softies you'll be gettin em thrown your way.

The oil slick on the surface of the water is from excess nutrients (waste). surface agitation will break it up but not totally remove it. Basically your skimmer cannot remove the amount of waste created by your fish, this is why you have nitrates as well. You have 2 options, get a better skimmer (not many options for a hang on model), or increase the volume and frequency of water changes.

see the thing is if i turn up my skimmer higher then it is i will get more water in my skimmer cup. but would that stop after a while. would it eventually start giving out skimmate if i left it up high all the time. for a longer time instead of half the power... again i have a prizm hob skimmer any help is greatly appreciated

and thanks for the comments so far. you guys are great.

ohh also guys the 2 powerheads i have. i have one without the air thingy attached to it and one that has it attached to it. should i have both without the air thingy that comes out of the tank to control flow. but it seems the one i have pointed upwards is the one that has the air flow attached when i put it high it produces alot of bubbles and scares the crap out of mah fishes. should i just take that air thing off and leave it off. any suggestions again are greatly appreciated.

also does anyone have any really good and easy skimmer plans please let me no thanks again

soon to be reefer and cant wait

Definitely remove the venturi (air thingy) attached to the powerhead. It'll cause more problems (salt spray, microbubbles, etc) than it solves.

Water changes and a better skimmer would be my recommendation (same as Rich). Maybe some macroalgae growing to compete for those nitrates.

I just set up a bare bottom 30 gallon, and all I can say is WOW. I'm convinced! (and possibly a new convert). It's been up for two weeks and the glass has yet to be scraped for algae. All corals in it are thriving. So maybe consider getting rid of the sand, but I totally understand why your wouldn't since I have a 120 that has sand in it that I like very much.
