MH get hot man ,really hot ,,,the bulbs ,and give off a good enuff amount of heat as well ,,that why we put fans in our canopy to move the heated air away from the water ,

reg lights ,very very little heat ,,
t5s give off heat as well ,not as much as MH but they a good job of letting off heat ,

thy get HOT , i have 2 250W MH w/10k bulbs and my tank temp can climb any whr from 4-7 degrees in temp...in summer u will either need chiller or fans for cooling. If u have it in main part off your house/apartment whr u will be constantly heating for the winter, u may need those items now.

I accidently touched one of my MH bulbs when i was cleaning my tank and got a second degree burn on my arm that took four months to heal properly. There's still a mark where it happened. The ballasts also get pretty damn hot. Even the supposedly cool electronic ballast. Heat from lights is probably the bioggest problem in reef keeping.

mine 3 400W bulbs get hot enough that i dont need to turn on the heat in the winter, the lights give off enough to heat my whole house.

my icecap ballasts dont really get too hot, they get got, but you can still touch them.

you will severly burn yourself if you touch the bulbs when they are lit. I have 2 exhaust fan to move the heat from the canopy. The heat does warm the house during the day. My Icecap MH ballast just gets warm.

My lights get hot as hell, but I have two thermostat controlled fans in the canopy which spin faster as it gots hotter in the hood. The ballasts just get warm (EVC 250 watt elec. ballasts). My tanks temperature range is from 79 - 82 degrees during ths time of the year. I positioned my tank so its very close to the ac, which should keep the temp very stable during the summer as well.

the bulbs are in a fixture with two icecap smart fans (one blows in one blows out) and it has a glass lens, so i cant touch the bulbs.
i have central A/C.
in the summer, con ed bill was $400-$600 (including A/C and all) i run them mostly during off-peak times so it is mainly at the cheaper rate.

man... $400-$600 ($4,800-$7,200)!!... you know how happy a wife/gf/partner/kids/parents wouLd be if you spent this kind of money on them :smokin:

put this in a mutual fund, stocks, options or a some high yield bonds and you can make a killing in less than 2 years

I bought an electronic ballast so it would be cooler. I can actually handle it when it's been on all day. But now it's in an enclosure, so it doesn't matter.

yeah, but i would also either freeze to death or get heat stroke before i got to enjoy the money.

as a matter of fact, it is my wife that this money is spent on.
I'm the one always lowering the heat and A/C then she comes around and raises them to full blast so that she wont be cold wearing shorts at home in the dead of winter - why she cant just wear sweatpants and spend less on heat beats the hell out of me.
