It is my belief that when you need to use any kind of profanity that it should at least be ***. People know what you mean but they get the point.

In this point in time whether you are 10 or 90 we use this language amongst our peers. We just dont use it when facing people that are not our equals. (kids to parents and vice versa)

Even though certain words are not being used on TV or Radio they are insiuated all the time.

I do however think that people should practice some kind of restraint when discussing something in a public forum. It is however inevitable to get some kind of profanity due to a certain amount of annonimity people enjoy on the internet. (or one too many beers in my case)

I dont believe that MR should be rated in way shape or form. There is no reason why anyone should think that MR is a vulgar site, because it is not. If anything get another couple of moderators who are always on the site (INK) and give them the power to edit phrases followed by a warning publicly and via PM. Repeated need for warning will result in suspension. Sure people will be able to sign up again but that is where you can block the originating IP.

So far my experiance with the people here on MR has been nothing but educational and fun (Ms. socks, skimmer wars etc) I dont believe that anyone can deny having fun with Ms. Socks.

If need be you can just implement filters which convert typed profanity into something harmless.

Be that as it may, I view this site as quite a friendly site, but as popularity grows due to certain advertising transient bungholes will show up and create disputes like on RC. You cant help that and all you can do is censor things that are typed and remove threads that are nasty or hurtful.

What sparked this thread anyway?

Freedom of speech is all fine and good but there is a time and place for everything.

And Kris, I sure hope Ms. Socks will not return. I still have that image in my head. And thats just awfull.

I own'd a forum bigger than this and what this thread is really saying is censorship.

That of course treads on the first amendment.

...but as Herman pointed out, filters should be turn'd on. I know we turned on filters and they can curse, buT all you see is **** ...thuS we are FREE to speak, yet be censored... unLess ya'LL don't believe in the first amendment... if not, where will the banning end... you can juSt imagine... :)

...just my exercising my freedom to speak

how about just asking people to use restraint and not curse, then you don't have to use filters or ban people.

that's not what MR is about. we are a group of reefers who have become close because we hang out and see each other in person. that's what keeps the site tight. we should be able to police ourselves and enjoy our 1st amendment rights ;)

what I'm saying is lets use the same restraint you might use in a business meeting or a first date, a social situation where you would not curse, that's all.

This is not about censorship.

i voted "R", but i wish to change my vote to PG-13.just think it's more appropiate for a public forum for reef discussion.although the Nudibar is a place for off topic discussion it's still part of the site which is dedicated for reefs.

I voted R, as I can see an occasional oh,s***t here and there. Sometimes it just helps to convey the surprise and/or frustration level of someone's problem, but I certainly don't see the need for the f word. Some innuendo's are fine, my son learned them in 6th grade. In catholic school. I'm 45 years old, maybe many of you are younger, but I'm sure that anything you see posted here is MUCH less offensive than what you encounter on a daily basis in real life. Just don't be explicit. there's no need here.

i agree, but if we site a real-life example like a condo vs. coop. people dislike coops because there is a board (moderators) who tell you what you can do to your house... is this board like that?
in a way. we're telling you you can't come out into the public hall and paint it paisley. If you want to paint your own living room purple, pink, and green go ahead. Just don't do it to the public areas. :P

i have a dauGhter and wouldn't want her seeing curse words on the screen, am just bringing to light the fact that this is a community and such yoU wiLL attract a variety of people. am just some wannabe reefer l0oKing for a bargaiN... :) :yo:

What if your daughter was looking at the site to find you a birthday present? (not that I know how old your child is, but you get my point) Would you like someone else's kid to be subjected to the same language you use on here?

me too.
once the profanity picks up, the level drops.
we should opt for more of a cafe atmosphere than a strip joint.
i would say, if they say it on the radio, it should be fine, otherwise use better judgement.
if there is just a slip up here and there, i dont see it as a big deal, but if it starts becoming more common (as i've noticed) maybe a friendly reminder to keep everyone in check is not such a bad idea.

perhaps as a punishment, repeat violaters should have their avatars switched to that of the MR mascot (for old times sake):

Im gonna tone it down personally, its true that profanity is sometimes just for s*** and giggles but some people might take it the wrong way, and since I cant control your mnd (trust me ive tried! :headache: )ill be a bit more vague when I can.

I forgot to mention, I think I saw ms. socks walking down the street last month in NYC, or it was her sister. I did not say anything I was too afraid.

is that why my head has been hurting the past few months? :wink1:

but your right everyone needs to chill and just think about what they are posting before you hit the submit button, I've deleted a bunch of things I typed that could have been taken the wrong way, before posting.
I think were all just a bunch of sarcastic (fill it in), so I'm all for self-awareness posting. can you call it censorship if you edit yourself? :scratchch

Personal I'm against all censorship of people words, specially when it's one person, or a group of people, making that decision. Remember these are only words, which most people use all the time, and if people got over that fact there would be less problems with them.

The reef/fish related posting have always been fine and if some one wants to use a curse word to describe some thing they should be able to. Now if they want to use a curse about another person then that some thing different and could be handled either through a PM or email from one of the moderators. If a modertor has a problem with some one post they should contact the person about it but it should be up to that person to make the change to their post, unless it's really a personal attack against some one.

Thats right, I think the Forum should be PG-13 EXCEPT for that little section we created call the Nudibar, which should be anything goes. That is after all what is was created for right? All we gotta do is have members request to have permission to view and post in that section

not exactly Reef guy,

the nudibar was created due to the popularity of the late night thread, and the need for a place to organize all the off topic subjects people have been posting.
the same rules still apply to the nudibar though, sorry.
