Remote Deep Sand Bed Questions

Hi all,

I finally got my act together and got CustomKing to make me a sump. Now that I have it, I am starting to put everything together, and I bought some live sand to start a RDSB in the refugium section of the new sump. My question is this - should I add anything to the sand? Any critters? Something mechanical to keep the sand mixing?

My understanding of a remote deep sand bed was that it is typically remote to other system functions (like sump or display).

For me, I use a RDSB with a dedicated fuge that i can remove quickly and easily - hence the term remote (for me). The reason I chose to put my chaeto in there was because I am only running about 65 gph through that fuge.

I guess what I am saying is remote for a dsb means having the ability to change it out in the event of a crash.

Not sure if this makes sense or not. Hope it's helpful

Unfortunately, I don't have the space to have it be completely remote. While my RDSB is in the sump, it is still quite accessible, and I don't think it'll be a problem to remove if there ever were an issue. Is it better to just leave the sand out and have the refugium be barebottom?

In asking my original question, I was thinking should I be specifically adding anything like snails, or copepods "in a jar" or something of that nature?
