A Mag 9 is fine for your return. If you feel it is too much flow though your sump then you can T it off to feed your refugium or another piece of equipment like a phosban reactor or UV sterilizer.

As for the glass sizes it would be best if you measure the inside of the tank yourself. If you are uncomfortable taking the measurements you could probably bring the tank to a glass shop and have them measure and cut the pieces for you. I would call the glass shop first and see if they would do that.

I just built mine today with a 30G tank copied from Melev's design. I used a jig saw to cut the 1/4" thick plexi glass. If you measure twice before you cut, got good sharp saw and make quick cut (if you go slow the plexi fuse back in after you go through) then it's pretty straight, and fairly easy.

For the measurements, my tank is 12" wide, I cut the baffle 11 6/8 and it snudge fit. For the 3 baffles bubble breaker, cut 4 strip 1" wide each and glue the one outside first, then the baffle, and 2nd one and so on.

My refugium is 15 l x 12 h x 12 w, intake: 12L x 10H x 12W, return 9L x 10H x 12 W. I used two tubes of Aquarim Silicon from HD, 3.95 each.

Hope this helps. Here are some pix.

The way you have there would also work because water entering from bottom go up then go back down and exit from the bottom.

With Melev's model, water goes over the first baffer, goes down, enter the 2nd partition from bottom then goes over the third one to the return section. With this design, the middle baffle is the highest, the first and the third have the same height.

Just put mine to work today, love it:splitspin

+1
I've built MANY sumps. Water entering the bubble trap from the top > under the second baffle > over the third baffle will make it easier for you to use a float switch in your middle (return pump) chamber to allow you to utilize an auto top off for evaporation. The water will also have less bubbles (the main intent of your bubble trap ;) ).

Looks like a nice sump. Should work well. Good luck.
