Nelson,
When I was running my biocube over a year ago ... the salinity made it up to 1.030 ... no affect on the corals or fish, it sat there for at least 4 days while I was away ... I would certainly bring it down ... An ATO is HIGHLY recommended on a nano ... It is much more difficult to keep parameters in order in a smaller tank.

are you using a refractometer or hydrometer to check ur salinity? hydrometers tend to read a lil off. in some cases really off.

Are you saying that a Hydrometer is useless?????
If so everything in my tank, and most peoples tank should be dead. Most people with SW tanks do not have a refractometer
As long as you take care of it and replace it once a year or so. Everything should be fine.

So how do you know it is high?

never said its useless... i just said it is not as accurate as a refractometer.... i mean if i can go out and buy an acan colony for 300+ why cant i spend an extra 30-40 bucks on something thats more accurate... like i said hydrometers tend to be a lil less accurate and are prone to fail more often because of salt drying up and what not... even the smallest bubbles trapped in the hydrometer can give you less accurate readings.... plus like u said a refractometer will last a life time and you have to replace ur hydrometer every year... in the long run ull save money with a refractometer

I agree w/ you Chef I have both, my Instant Ocean (hydro) most of the time is very close to the reading I get from my refractometer. I always rinse it and allow it to airdry so it goes to show that how you treat and maintain your equipment has a great deal to do w/ its performance. :banghead:

I tend to believe the Refractormeter is more accurate.Wasn't even that close when compared to a hydrometer.

I know it is, a badly calibrated one will give you a consistent wrong reading, but it is easy to check and correct. The plastic swing arm will never read the same if you take 10 readings in the row, therefor your chances of getting a wrong reading is a lot higher.

Refractometers are used in a lot of industrial applications, like measure battery acid density and the ethylene glycol concentration in the de-icing fluids in aviation.
