I have a 30 gallon tank that has been set up from Feb 09. In the last two weeks I noticed a lot af Red Algae growing on my glass and all over my filters. I have checked the water quallty and everything is fine. Temp of the water is 80 degrees. What is the best way to remove this/prevent this?

best thing to do is syphon it out, I was told that by Andy from pets wherehouse. Just take a tube and syphon out red algie. Ome of the members on this form crashed his tnak from adding chemicals. O and also make sure when you are removing it that it does not go all over the place you dont want it to spread throught out the whole tank.

I know I saw that thread. Terrible loss. I scraped some off last night with a razor blade and did not syphon. It came off rather easily. so should i stay away from chemicals? Is this caused by bad water quality. I did a water change two days ago and tested the water last night and the quality was fine.

now with a razor blade that would not be coralline algie or is it slime like red hair. A picture would help. If it comes off in flakes then it is coraline algie. Do you add any chemicals to the water.

if it s hard to scrape off and you are using a razor then yeah it is coraline algie you could use the cal buffer but just check the cal levels before dosing. If you are groing alot of the coraline then u have good cal levels now now in the tank. Test first before you dose any thing. :birthday::splitspin

there is a frag swap comming up if you want to get your hands on some nice coral. Just try to stay away from the sps ( i learned they need intense lighting to grow since you have t-5 I would say go with softie and hard coral but not alot of hard coral) Brains are good duncan are realy good and so on zoos. Post a picture of your tank I would like to see it and are you new to this site?

the frag swap is in august at alantis marine world in river head long island. I might be bringing a hammer head coral if you want to the swapp if you want to pick it up or come this weekend it is up to you. What is the size of the tank and do u have a picture of it. Where are you located.
I have a 30 gallon tank and I have a green Tip hammer in there already. thanks for the offer though. I have approx 10 small corals and all seem to be doing fine. Only have 3 fish 2 percs and a Coral Beauty. I am located in Staten Island. I am looking to upgrade to a 75 gallon in the future though. I will try and get some pics of the tank soon.

I agreee I starrted off with a small tank and then went up to a 180 and 46 bow front reef. Good luck with the up grade and see if you can come to the swap.
